Romney sheep first originated in the harsh weather and boggy marshes
of Kent, England. This climate and region allowed them to develop
several desirable characteristics unique to the Romney breed, making
them one of the most popular breeds among sheep owners. Their
resistance to diseases caused by wet, soggy conditions appeals to
shepherds. Infections, such as foot rot, seldom plague a Romney flock.
These harsh climatic conditions also encouraged incredibly healthy
fleeces.  Hand spinners seek out Romney fleeces for their uniformity,
strength, and long staple length. Lastly, this breed has developed the
bone structure of a meat breed, making them a dual purpose sheep.
Such unique characteristics of the Romney sheep in America makes them
not only one of the most popular breeds of sheep, but also one of the
most durable and healthy.
